We know swimming can be a challenge for many women. sheJAMs has been very successful over the years teaching women to be more comfortable in the water, for race day or any day! All abilities are welcome. We have 3 swim sessions.

SWIM SESSION 1 & 2 are in the pool. We have locations in both Cumberland & Westbrook. Swim session 3 is a combination of pool swim and open water swimming.  This session has 3 locations, Cumberland, Westbrook & Kennebunk.

Our TECHNIQUE class is for woman who want to be a better more confident swimmer. All abilities are welcome. This swim program will have weekly group instruction and you will receive a work out to do on your own.

Our MASTERS class is for those who feel comfortable with their stroke and want to add speed to their swim. You should be capable of lap swimming without stopping for at least 1,000 yards. You should be familiar with training in the pool with others.  This class will give you a warm up, drills and a workout. You will also receive a work out to do on your own.

SESSION 3 is the swim portion of our Triathlon Program. This session will prepare you to swim comfortably in open water. So, if you are part of a relay, in a triathlon, or want to compete in an open water swim, this class is for you!  We will have both a Technique Class and Masters Class for this session. We have 3 locations.  Portland & Westbrook & Kennebunk.

In this session we start in the pool for swim instruction and then move to open water.

CUMBERLAND – POOL  SWIM:   SUNDAY – We will start the program in the Greely High School Pool in Cumberland for 5 weeks.  You will be divided into two or possibly three categories.

WESTBROOK – POOL SWIM:   THURSDAY – We will start the program in the Westbrook Community Center pool in Westbrook for 5 weeks.

OPEN WATER SWIM:  MONDAY  We will combine the two pool programs from Cumberland & Westbrook will switch to open water on Monday, June 5th at Crystal Lake  from  6:00 – 7:00 pm. When the ocean warms up we will move to the ocean to swim.

SESSION 3

SWIM & BIKE TRAINING: (Session 3 Swim Group Only). 

SWIM:  First 5 weeks in the pool – Choice of Westbrook – Thursday’s 5:30 pm. or Cumberland – Sunday 4 pm TECHNIQUE 5 pm MASTERS.  (see details above)

BIKE:       Combination of WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY – 6 pm/ and SATURDAY 8 am–  We bike train on  Wednesday & Thursday and some Saturday’s. (see below for dates) Meeting places will change weekly for variable scenery and terrain. 1st BIKE PROGRAM STARTS, SATURDAY, MAY 6

Bike training dates are as follows:

  • MAY ~  Sat 6, Sat 13, Sat 20, Wed 24, Wed 31. (please note these last two dates are Wednesdays)

COACH KIRSTEN READ

Kirsten Head ShotKirsten began swimming at the age of 8 and went on to win MA state titles and compete at Brown University.   After a hiatus of 20 years she has now embraced masters swimming, and has especially fallen in love with open water swimming.  She has competed in many open water races all over New England and further from home, winning Peaks to Portland, Boston Sharkfest, and the Bermuda Round the Sound 10K, to name a few.  In addition, this return to swimming has provided personal growth, health, friendship, and camaraderie surpassing all expectations.

She is now a coach, specializing in open water and technique for masters swimmers and triathletes.  She enjoys sharing her passion and expertise with athletes of all levels and abilities.


COACH LAURA FLEWELLINGLaura F

Laura has been an active person since she was a child. She tried many different sports but fell in love with the sport of swimming by age 8. In high school she was nationally ranked in the breaststroke and was given a scholarship to swim for Florida State University. Since completing her college career, she is switching gears to train for triathlons with the ultimate goal of competing in a Half Ironman competition. She loves anything active and outdoors, making Maine a wonderful place to live.
While training as an athlete, Laura graduated in 2015 from Florida State University with a degree in Exercise Science. As a certified exercise physiologist, Laura works as a personal trainer and instructor at Dynamics Fitness. She works with clients personally and in small groups to help them reach their fitness goals. She is excited to transition her coaching back into the pool to help others share her love of swimming.

COACH KATIE DWYER

USAT Certified Coach

Katie lives in Saco and works in Arundel as a fourth grade teacher.  She started competing in triathlons 6 years ago after a running injury.  She received her USAT Level 1 Coaches certification in 2016.  Katie has competed in all triathlon distances and is a two time Ironman.  Previously, she was the Assistant swim coach at St. Joseph’s College.  Katie’s first love, swimming, began at an early age, and she enjoys competing in various open water swim races.  She wants to combine her teaching experience with her knowledge of the sport to encourage other women to participate in triathlons and open water swimming events.
