The Great Maine Bike Swaps offer a great way to buy used bicycles at an affordable price. You also can sell the bikes cluttering your garage or basement and turn them into cash. At the swaps, you can choose from hundreds of bikes, including hybrids, road bikes, mountain bikes, children’s bikes, recumbents and more. The inventory covers all price ranges, so you’re sure to find something that suits your budget. And you’ll be going “green” by getting a gently used bike rather than a new one. Volunteers will help you find a bike that fits, and you’ll be able to go on a test ride.

If you’re selling bicycles, knowledgeable volunteers will help you set the price. You can check online to see if your bikes sold.

Those wanting to sell bicycles should drop them off on the Saturday before the swaps between 6:30 and 8 p.m. or on the morning of the swaps between 8 and 9:30 a.m. You fill out some paperwork and pay $3. If your bike sells, we will mail you a check within seven to 10 business days for the proceeds minus a 15 percent donation to the Bicycle Coalition. If your bike has not sold, you may pick it up at the swap’s conclusion – or you may donate it to a recycle-a-bike program.

If you’re shopping for a bicycle, show up early for the best selection. You’ll have a chance to see displays by local bikes shops and community organizations, get some delicious refreshments and pick up information about Maine biking events.

Admission is $3, with free admission for students at the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine and children 12 or younger. For more information, call the Bicycle Coalition of Maine at (207) 623-4511 or e-mail.

Sugar Linked to Heart Disease, Cancer April 3, 2012

By Meghan G. Loftus

A segment that aired on CBS’s 60 Minutes on Sunday features comments from a few experts who think sugar could contribute to the development of many serious health problems, including heart disease and cancer. The primary source for the segment—Dr. Robert Lustig, a California endocrinologist—points out that sugar consumption has been on the rise since the 1970s, when the public was advised to cut down on fatty foods. “Take the fat out of food, it tastes like cardboard,” Lustig says. “And the food industry knew that. So they replaced it with sugar.” Since then, rates of heart disease and diabetes have steadily increased. A study that’s currently taking place, led by Kimber Stanhope, a nutritional biologist at the University of California, Davis, may tell us why: Excessive sugar consumption seems to cause a chain reaction that elevates levels of small dense LDL—the worst kind of cholesterol—in the bloodstream. This type of cholesterol binds to vessel walls and can cause blockages. Sugar may affect a person’s cancer risk, too. Lewis Cantley, a Harvard professor and the head of the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center, says the insulin spikes caused by sugar ingestion could cause certain types of cancerous tumors to grow. Nearly one third of common cancers—among them, breast and colon cancers—have insulin receptors, and when they’re hit with insulin, the tumor is stimulated to consume glucose. So what does this mean? The experts in the 60 Minutes segment recommend cutting back drastically on sugar, or even avoiding it altogether. The second option may not be practical for long-distance runners, who need to replenish energy stores to complete their workouts. If you’re in need of immediate energy (i.e., in the middle of a long run) when you consume sugar, your body will convert it into energy instead of beginning the chain reaction that elevates bad cholesterol levels. But when you’re just lounging around, it is likely best to follow the experts’ advice. Check out these tips from our nutrition editor, Joanna Golub, on how to determine whether what you’re about to eat is loaded with potentially hazardous added sugars.

Do-It-Yourself Injury Prevention: Interview With Dr. Jordan Metzl

By Somyr Perry

Published Mar. 9, 2012

comments Tweet Share His new book is the ultimate guide for athletes struggling with injuries. Jordan Metzl, MD, a renowned New York City-based sports physician, recently authored “The Athlete’s Book of Home Remedies,” the ultimate DIY guide for athletes struggling with injuries. Dr. Metzl is a competitive age-group triathlete and marathoner. Actually, he’s pretty hardcore, completing Ironman Lake Placid last July, the New York City Marathon last November, as well as the Psycho Wyco ultra marathon trail race in Kansas City.

Competitor.com caught up with Metzl to uncover how he conceptualized his new book and to see if he takes his own advice in training.

Competitor.com: What was your inspiration for the book?

Jordan Metzl: Athletes are busy. They just want to do their sports and stay healthy. More importantly, they want to know when an injury is serious enough to see a doctor, what kind of doctor to see, and also when to consider surgery. With so much information out there, one can easily get information that will lead them down the wrong path. There is just all kinds of crazy information that is easily accessible through the Web. I wanted to give athletes the most-up-to date information on how to recognize, prevent and treat almost every injury and medical condition they will encounter. I wrote this both as an athlete and as a doctor, which is why we chose to put both images on the cover.

Who is your target audience?

Anyone who wants to stay active, fit, and stay in the game. This would include runners, triathletes, soccer players, skiers—basically there is something in the book for every sport. There is also information for all ages. I have everything from how to treat runner’s knee to how to treat a concussion to how to plan your meals based on your training.

What are three takeaways that you hope readers get from your book?

With good information, athletes can treat most of their injuries at home by themselves. Medical tests have become increasingly sophisticated, meaning they show every tear or strain. Not all of these issues need surgery, in fact, most don’t. Knowledge is power and the information in the book will allow athletes to make the smartest decisions for themselves. Prevention is essential. In both the book and the enhanced e-book I go through my workoutcalled “Ironstrength” that athletes can do any time, any place, that will not only improve performance, it will reduce injury.

What advice in the book do you actually use yourself?

As a dedicated runner (I’ve done 29 marathons) and triathlete (9 Ironmans), I know that for my own body I want to keep performing at a high level and beating my brother, Jamie. I also know that as a sports medicine doctor, runners who train about half as much as the triathletes, are hurt more than twice as often. So my idea of making this as much about prevention and performance enhancement was important to me. I teach my “Ironstrength” classes here in New York to my patients so they can learn the most important exercises to keep their bodies moving. I do these exercises myself to keep me going. Most importantly, they are very time efficient. I can do my workout twice per week for 45 minutes and that’s all the strength training I need. I find that my joints ache less and that I can run longer, faster, and with less injury. ****
